No matter where you reside, as a Muslim, it is important to have a know-how of what ingredients are being used in a food item. It is easier to find halal food items in Muslim countries, but checking each product’s ingredients before consuming it is safer. 

With that being said, rumours often circulate about brands without proper evidence backing these claims. It is, in fact, more important to check whether these allegations are true or not instead of avoiding the product altogether.

● Lays Potato Chips 

Lays uses the flavor enhancer E-631 in its chips. This is an additive which can be extracted from both halal and non-halal sources, which is what often causes confusion among consumers. Fortunately for those of us who love Lays, SANHA (South African National Halal Authority) officially stated that Lays is 100% certified halal as the E-631 is extracted from plant-based sources.
