The National Telecom and Information Technology Security Board (NTISB) has issued a new advisory concerning the growing threat of cyber attacks in Pakistan. This advisory warns citizens about 16 specific browser extensions that hackers are using to gain unauthorized access to user data. IT security expert Kanwal Cheema has also provided valuable insights on how users can protect themselves from these cyber threats.

Understanding Cyber Attacks

Cyber attacks involve unauthorized attempts by hackers to access, steal, or manipulate personal and sensitive data from users and organizations. These attacks can occur in various forms, including:

  • Phishing Attacks: Fraudulent emails or messages designed to steal user credentials.

  • Malware Infections: Harmful software installed unknowingly on a system.

  • Data Breaches: Unauthorized access to confidential databases.

  • Ransomware Attacks: Hackers lock files and demand payment for restoration.

List of 16 Harmful Browser Extensions Identified

The NTISB advisory has flagged the following 16 browser extensions as potential threats:

# Extension Name
1 AI Assistant ChatGPT and Gemini for Chrome
2 Bard AI Chat Extension
3 GPT 4 Summary with OpenAI
4 Search CoPilot AI Assistant for Chrome
5 Wayin AI
6 VPNCity
7 Internet VPN
8 Vidniz Flex Video Recorder
9 VidHelper Video Downloader
10 Bookmark Favicon Changer
11 UVoice
12 Reader Mode
13 Parrot Talks
14 Primus
15 Trackker Online Keylogger Tool
16 AI Shop Buddy

These extensions, including certain VPN services and AI-powered chatbots, are being exploited by hackers to access user information, potentially leading to data breaches and financial losses.

Steps to Protect Yourself from Cyber Attacks

1. Remove Harmful Browser Extensions

If you have any of the above extensions installed in your browser, immediately remove them. To do this:

  • Open Google Chrome or your respective browser.

  • Go to Extensions (Settings > Extensions).

  • Locate the suspicious extension and click remove.

2. Change Your Passwords

If you have used any of the flagged extensions, change all your passwords immediately. Use:

  • A strong combination of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and special characters.

  • Two-factor authentication (2FA) for additional security.

3. Use Trusted Browser Extensions

Always install browser extensions from reputable sources, preferably those recommended by Google or Microsoft. Avoid unknown developers.

4. Secure Your Devices

  • Install updated antivirus software.

  • Regularly update your browser and operating system.

  • Use a secure VPN with verified security protocols.

5. Be Cautious with AI and Chatbot Extensions

Some AI-based browser extensions might store user data, making them vulnerable to hacking attempts. Only use AI chatbots and tools from trusted sources.

Cybercrime Statistics in Pakistan

According to a written report submitted by the Ministry of Interior in the National Assembly, Pakistan has witnessed a significant increase in cybercrime complaints. Here are some key insights:

Category Statistics
Total Cybercrime Complaints (Last 5 Years) 600,000+
Conviction Rate Only 3.16%
Cases with Convictions Less than 4%

The low conviction rate suggests a need for stronger cybersecurity measures and legal enforcement.

Impact of Cyber Attacks on Users

If a hacker gains access to your data, you may face:

  • Identity theft – Stolen personal details used for fraud.

  • Financial losses – Unauthorized transactions and drained bank accounts.

  • Data leakage – Confidential files exposed to the public.

  • System hijacking – Hackers taking control of your devices.
