Islamabad, The campuses of Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) are going to established in Khudabad and Mithi in the province of Sindh.
This was announced by Sindh Minister for Education and Literacy Pir Mazharul Haq, along with the officials of the AIOU. He said that this was being done on the directive of President Asif Ali Zardari to spread modern education in far flung areas of the province.
The minister said that such campuses would also be set up in Shikarpur and other districts. He pointed out that during the dictatorial regime, Sindh was ignored in the realms of higher education.
Haq said that Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto had laid the foundation of optic fiber in Pakistan and had introduced the computer education.
The University with its main campus at Islamabad and huge network of regional centers spread all over the country is serving its custom all over Pakistan and in the Middle East. AIOU is a Distance Education institution, which provides multi-disciplinary education from basic to doctoral level programs.
The university has established 36 regional campuses and centers in several parts of the country to coordinate and facilitate decentralized system of education of the university. The regional directors keep a schedule of qualified teachers and experts in each field of study in their area and enlist them as the university’s part-time tutors. Each group of students is assigned to a tutor for guidance.
AIOU already has 36 to 40 campuses all over the country, the number of these campuses will be increased to 39 within this year, the VC added. He appreciated the gesture of some public representatives and well-to-do people who had offered land to the university free of cost for building new campuses and study centers in various regions.
AIOU has been focusing on expanding its academic network to wide-ranging areas and providing education to the neglected regions of the society.
