Karakurum International University (KIU) Gilgit

Karakurum International University is a leading institute of higher education. it is a public sector university chartered by Government of Pakistan. The University is located at the surroundings of mountains at the point where the Gilgit and Hunza rivers join. The university’s main campus is situated in Gilgit on University Road. There are sixteen academic departments in where there are nearly 3100 students and 150 members of faculty and more than 100 administrative staff.

• Skardu Campus is situated at Hussainabad road Skardu and Chief Minister Gilgit-Baltistan inaugurated this Campus of the university in July 2011.
• Karakurum International University is to be a multi-campus university and with special support and resources the university is seeking to establish additional campuses. There are 4 disciplines in Skardu Campus i.e. English, Business Management, Computer Sciences, and Education.
• The university offers the admission to the bachelors, Masters, MS and PHD programs. The admission procedure is mentioned on the website. The admission to the university is open for everyone without any discrimination of gender, of any religion, race, creed, or domicile. The candidate should only have to be academically qualified for the admission.

History

Karakurum International University Gilgit was formed in 2002 to provide the facility of higher education to the deserving students. General Pervez Musharraf and the President of Pakistan ordered the established of the university.

The University Education

The educational strategy that is followed in the university is unconventional, creative and application oriented. The university’s educational strategy is against conventional and rigid compartmentalization of departments. Instead it promotes a multidisciplinary integration in planning the courses, programs and projects according to the requirements of the mountain areas. The educational strategy does not compromise in terms of quality.

The teaching methodology is following interactive and participatory learning by using multimedia and projectors. The training is offered in vocations. The students can take the training in the evening together with their course of study.

Campus Facilities

• The campus facilitates the students by offering them transport facility, student hostel, cafeteria, access to Microsoft software, computer labs, internet resource center, etc.
• The transport facility is limited and is given on specific routes and within the municipal limits of the city and also on the first come first served basis. There are only 4 buses, 2 hi-aces and 2 coasters.
• The university hostel consists of two building. One building is for girls’ hostel and the other building is under construction.
• The cafeteria of the university provides the students the place where they can enjoy eating their meals. The cafeteria not only provides good meal to the students but also a clean environment to them where they can socially interact with each other. The food quality is maintained high and everything is available at subsidized rates.
• The students and the staff members can access the Microsoft genuine softwares. They can also download the full suite of the Microsoft products free of cost.
• There are 5 furnished and air conditioned computer labs in the university. Each lab is equipped with the latest computers. The computer has the capacity to accommodate more than 60 computers. The internet facility is also offered to the students.
