On 31st December 2019 coronavirus hit the Wuhan, a city of China. From this epicenter of emergence, it widely spread to the other countries as well and declared pandemic by the World Health Organization. The virus has affected the lives of millions of people worldwide. It is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2).

Coronavirus is called as COVID-19

The World Health Organization named this disease as the COVID-19. Coronavirus is called COVID-19 as CO stands for corona, VI for Virus, D for disease, and 19 for the year2019. Previously it was named the 2019-nCov because it was the novel coronavirus. It was developed by a new strain that has not been identified by the humans previously.

The following are some important facts about the coronavirus. Read on and get to know about certain particulars associated with this deadly disease.

What is coronavirus?

Coronavirus belongs to one of the large families of the virus and commonly known as human and animal viruses. They were discovered in the 1930s and up till now, seven coronaviruses are responsible to infect the humans.

  • Four Coronaviruses that cause the acute symptoms are 229E, OC43, NL63, and HUK1.
  • Three Coronaviruses that cause severe symptoms are SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, and SARS-Cov2.

Is coronavirus Different From Other viruses

The novel coronavirus is not like the other coronaviruses that cause the common cold in the infected people. It is far more severe as its consequences led to the death of the patients. In the past, no infection has been reported due to this strain of the virus that’s why it is difficult to control the disease.

COVID-19 and Flu are Not the Same

The coronavirus and flu both are respiratory infectious diseases but they are not the same at all. The major difference are in the level of infection, treatment and  symptoms. The flu is caused by the influenza virus and can be treated with antivirals. But the coronavirus is more deadly as it is rapidly affecting the people.

Possible Complications Caused

A strange type of pneumonia is developed after the infection from the coronavirus. Apart from the pneumonia people also suffer some other complications like acute respiratory distress syndrome, cardiovascular shock, and heart damage.

What Are the Symptoms?

The symptoms can be varied depending upon the type of disease they caused. Commonly they caused the common cold, cough, tiredness, and muscle pain. Sometimes severe diseases cen be occurred such as

  • Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)
  • Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS)

The Root Cause of Infection

Coronavirus follows the zoonosis infection and the disease transfer from animals to humans. The virus crosses the species barrier and develops the infection in humans when they have close contact with the infected animal. The virus is then spread from one person rapidly through the respiratory droplets. It has been suspected that the virus is transmitted from bat to the human in the food market of Wuhan. That later on developed into the major disaster that sweeps across the whole world.

Risk of Infection

The people living in the proximity of the infected person are at high risk of infection. The risk can be minimized by keeping the specific distance and by covering the face with a mask. The saliva, as well as the respiratory droplets through coughing and sneezing, can also become the cause of infection in the other person. Moreover, the people of old age that are suffering from any other disease can also be affected by this virus that include

  • Heart conditions
  • Asthma
  • Weak Immune System
  • Severe Obesity

How it Can be Diagnosed?

The viral infections are generally diagnosed by collecting samples of blood, saliva, or tissue. The coronavirus diagnosis also follows the same procedure. The cotton swabs are mostly used to collect the nasal sample. Moreover recently, some kits have also been developed that are proved effective in the diagnosis of coronavirus.

Is There Any Treatment available?

Currently, no treatment is available for the coronavirus and all the countries are struggling to find an effective vaccine. The doctors are prescribing antiviral and retroviral medications to manage the symptoms of the virus. Several therapies such as blood plasma transfusions, steroids can prove helpful. Experimental tests are being carried out to test the effectiveness of these therapies against the virus.

Precautionary Measures to Control Coronavirus

In the time of the pandemic, when there is no proper treatment to cure the disease the doctors recommend to take the precautionary measures to minimize the virulence. The only way to halt the spread of the virus is by following the non-pharmaceutical interventions such as

  • Wash your hands frequently
  • Keep the distance and limit the contact with the infected person
  • Cover cough and Sneezes and wear a mask
  • Separate the sick

Make sure to follow all the guidelines provided by World health Organization and protect yourself from the outbreak of coronavirus. Stay home and Stay Safe!
