Traffic is a very common problem of the citizen of Lahore. You will see traffic jams on the roads at morning and evening timings. People are packed in the buses and vans like sacks, young boys and students climb up the roofs of the buses, vehicle's horns never allow you to hear the voice of the person beside you. All of us face these traffic problems but here I'll try to tell you the problems of students. Recently I've interviewed a student of Punjab University about the traffic problems of students. Some important part of the interview is presented here.
At morning, people were on their way to offices, school, colleges, etc. So, there is great rush on the roads and that time there is shortage of public transports on the roads. Due to which buses and vans are full and people are on the roofs and hanging on the door of the buses. Students who are getting late for their classes have to climb up buses as soon as possible and in this struggle sometimes they got injuries in many incidents. Public transporters should provide more vehicles at morning and evening times so that more and more people accommodated at rush hour. Government never thinks about the traffic problems of the students. The rain and the VIP movements are also create a big problem for the students. Few weeks ago when the Egyptian President came in Lahore the most of the students of 9th class couldn't reach to the examination hall due to the traffic blockage and got late from their paper.
Students got pocket money from parents but you know in student life how much money student has is always not enough. Students always feel that pocket money is not enough for their expenses. Due to this they don't give fare in buses and vans and fight with conductor. Another aspect is the young age of students, in this age we need adventurous activities. Students climb up the roofs of buses for adventure and to save money.
Due to traffic rush our most of the time consumed during traveling. As I come from Shahdara and it takes two hours to reach at university in morning and on return it takes nearly one and half hour. Approximately, we spend four hour in traveling which give no output. Due to the four hours of the traveling we were very tired and can't do any thing else and study at home. Every year there are students from Shahdara who are on topper list of Matric, Intermediate and Graduation. Because students study in Shahdara and not spend lots of time in traveling. When these topper students go to university their most of energy and time waste during traveling to university. So government should think about it.
Atif said that his classes start at 12:30pm and university bus for university comes to my area at 7am. So it doesn’t suitable for me. University bus service is very good and lots of students use it. After half an hour bus travel New Campus to Old Campus. Instead of it many other buses go to all over the city. But in the buses which go to Shalimar and four points of Shahdara there is too much rush.
Many people say government should provide buses for students. But it would be very costly. I think government should start public transport system and vehicle should come on time. Widen the roads and remove the hurdles. On River Ravi Bridge there is always traffic jam on morning and evening times. Traffic wardens stop the motor cycle rickshaws and send them from Old Ravi bridge which takes lots of time and rickshaws driver demand for extra fare.
