There are many good qualities which can lead you to happiness and achievements, but there is only one thing which will lead you towards long term success that is self-discipline. Many people disagree with discipline part they think that it means no freedom, no happiness, and only loneliness. As Stephen R. Covey once wrote, "the undisciplined are slaves to moods, appetites, and passions"

What is self-discipline, in simple terms we can say that it means, acting according to what you actually think about a situation instead of how you feel about it? Sometimes it means that you have to sacrifices the pleasure and thrill of the moment which matter a lot for you.
If you are struggling with self-discipline, so the good news is that you can develop it. There are some steps you can follow to achieve self-discipline.
Self-Knowledge
Discipline means behaving according to what you have actually decided is best for you, irrespective of how you feel in the moment. So first step towards self-discipline is self-knowledge. You need to figure out that what behavior best reflects your goals and values. This involves self-analysis, know about your skills. It will be better if you just write down your goals, dreams, and ambitions. It will be good if you read about your dreams and look at them all the time they will help you to move towards self-discipline for the sake of your life goals.
Conscious Awareness
To develop self-discipline in yourself you must know that you are undisciplined. How you can know about it?
When you start to build self-discipline, you may observe some habits of yours which make you realize that you need to change them like biting your nails, avoiding walk, eating piece of cake, checking emails all the time. These habits represent that there is no discipline in your life. If you get aware of your undisciplined behavior in early stage of your life, it will help you to see your goal clearly and help you to better align your values as well.
Commitment to Self-Discipline
It is not enough to just write down your goals and values. You must be serious and committed about your goals. You should realize yourself that what is important for you will be achieved when you have self-discipline in you. So commitment towards self-discipline is more important than just writing the goal and values.
Courage
It is very difficult to maintain self-discipline. Moods, appetites, and passions can be powerful forces to go against. That is why self-discipline is highly dependent on courage. Don’t think that it is going to be any easy to develop self-discipline; you have to sacrifice a lot for this. As you achieve small private victorious, your self-confidence will grow and the courage that you have will help you to develop self-discipline more naturally.
Internal Coaching
Always remember that you are alone, not anyone is going to be with you all the time. So, you have to encourage yourself, motivate yourself. You have to do this all the time, tell yourself that you can achieve whatever you want nothing is easy but you are not weak as well. Other people can discourage you that it’s useless to learn self-discipline; you are not going to be successful. But always remember that you are the one who knows everything about you. Always motivate yourself and find a way to think positive and do positive as well. This activity is also called internal coaching as well. This activity is going to help you today and tomorrow as well. So always believe in yourself and don’t forget to motivate yourself as well.
