Knowledge Sharing
"Gaining Knowledge is first step; Sharing Knowledge is the second step."
In very general terms, knowledge sharing can be defined as a healthy constructive activity through which knowledge, skills, expertise, and information is exchanged and discussed among people, friends, families, and communities.
Why do we need to share knowledge?
The main purpose of Knowledge is its contribution towards the betterment of society and the wellness of our fellow human beings. There have been thousands of great scholars, scientists, philosophers and politicians in our history and the world would have been a terrible place to live in today only if those great people haven't passed their knowledge to their followers and other people. Knowledge sharing is a chain process which traverses from generation to generation and molds our lives in quite a constructive way. Imagine if Socrates teachings haven’t been passed on to us by his followers or if Ibn-e-Haitham findings never reached us. Yes, we just cannot imagine that. Knowledge sharing is critically important since it is more of multiplicative activity rather than a division activity. Back in 1950's, people used to gather at cafes in Europe to discuss ideas. Newton got a challenge to prove gravitational theory mathematically by his friends when they were having a chit chat at a café and see, he actually did that.
Create habits and routines
Sharing for the sake of sharing is not going to work. There should be some kind of events, talks, conferences, workshops or other social activities where people are interested to come and participate. These kinds of events help other people to contribute and share their knowledge related to their fields. Knowledge sharing doesn't take place by just meeting with people, you need to create an environment to deliver knowledge in an effective way that will benefit others.
Barriers in Sharing Knowledge
It is a bitter reality that many people are not willing to share their knowledge. There are multiple barriers in "knowledge sharing" practical implementation. So far, the biggest issue is the mindset of people. People do not want to share their knowledge since it will make them replaceable by other people. We need to work together to shift this mentality from "Knowledge is Power" to "Sharing knowledge is actual Power". Knowledge shouldn’t be kept to oneself but it is a responsibility to share it and to help other people. The knowledge dies with the person if not shared.
Barriers in sharing knowledge can be summarized as following:
- Psychological fear of sharing and becoming replaceable
- Lack of understanding the concept of knowledge sharing
- Mentality that no one needs knowledge or will listen to you
- Using knowledge as a tool to be in spotlight instead of sharing it
