National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases is a tertiary cardiac-care centre became fully functional in 1971. In 1956, it took its humble beginning from small Central Heart Clinic located in ward of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC). The funds and equipments received by Government of Pakistan and Japanese Government enabled NICVD to become a major primary heart-care provider for Pakistanis. In 50 years of its establishment NICVD, it has served millions of patients ailing from heart diseases. Until 1979, NICVD worked as a NON Governmental Organization (NGO). Presently, NICVD is an autonomous body working under legislation of Federal Ministry of Health. The government of Pakistan nationalized it for greater good.
