MDCAT Irregularities Triggers Court’s Involvement
The Sindh High Court’s order comes in response to multiple appeals highlighting potential flaws and irregularities in the MDCAT exam. During the hearing, the court questioned the efforts of the committee, chaired by Shireen Narejo that had been tasked with investigating the matter. The Sindh Court expressed dissatisfaction with the committee's progress and investigated further into the alleged compromised examination process.
The committee chairperson, Shireen Narejo, submitted a report on the outcomes. She informed the court that the committee had examined Dow University's examination system and reviewed statements and evidence provided by the petitioners. According to Shireen Narejo, numerous complaints surfaced from students regarding the integrity of the MDCAT 2024 exam, and the investigation revealed flaws in the Dow University's system with involvement from approximately 40 individuals in the examination process.
Evidence of MDCAT Leaks and FIA Investigation
The Sindh court analyzed the investigation's results, raising questions about whether the MDCAT paper had been leaked. Shireen Narejo confirmed that various exam related answers and questions circulated through WhatsApp, suggesting potential breaches.
In light of these revelations, the Sindh High Court inquired into the role of the Federal Investigation Agency FIA in investigating these allegations. FIA officials confirmed that forensic analysis of devices involved in the examination process uncovered deleted messages, indicating possible tampering with the paper leak evidence.
MDCAT Examination Process under Criticism
The Sindh High Court also raised concerns over the competence of Dow University in administering the MDCAT exam. Justice Salahuddin Panhwar questioned the procedures, including the creation of the exam questionnaire, which reportedly involved contributions from college professors. The court also noted that the current MDCAT test setup may disadvantage students from less privileged backgrounds due to high exam fees, while criticizing the apparent lack of inclusivity in the admission process.
PMDC’s Role and Responsibilities Examined
The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council PMDC also faced inspection from the court. The court challenged the PMDC’s oversight role, questioning why it outsourced the MDCAT administration and if it was taking strict measures to ensure fairness. PMDC’s counsel stated that they were willing to implement any decision made by the court and clarified that MDCAT exam administration falls under the provincial jurisdiction.
Court’s Decision - Retake of MDCAT 2024 Ordered
In its ruling, the Sindh High Court highlighted the importance of fairness and equal opportunity in the MDCAT test. The court ordered the retake of MDCAT within 4 weeks to provide all candidates with a fair chance for medical and dental admissions. The decision aims to address the complaints of the petitioners and uphold the integrity of the admission process in medical and dental institutions across the Sindh province.
The PMDC and relevant educational institutions are now required to prepare for the upcoming MDCAT retest, ensuring a transparent and unbiased examination process that aligns with the High Court’s instructions. This MDCAT 2024 retake is intended to provide clarity and fair access for all candidates seeking admission to government medical and dental colleges and universities in the province.
