Measures to Combat Smog Crisis
Senior Punjab Minister Maryam Aurangzeb, in a press conference, announced a series of emergency measures to tackle the smog conditions in Punjab. These include:
- Extending hospital OPD hours until 8 PM to accommodate the rising number of patients.
- Canceling holidays for government hospital staff.
- Banning construction activities in Lahore and Multan until further notice.
- Advising citizens to avoid outdoor travel, particularly on motorcycles, unless absolutely necessary and to wear masks when going out.
10 Year Plan to Address Smog
The Punjab government has outlined a 10 year policy which is aimed at eliminating smog from the province. While acknowledging that smog control is a long term process, the government has taken immediate actions, such as demolishing kilns not using zigzag technology and enforcing strict environmental regulations.
“Various departments are working tirelessly to combat smog, but it requires sustained efforts over time,” Minister Aurangzeb said. The government is monitoring the situation and plans to review data on smog levels by Wednesday.
Health Lockdown’s Impact on Daily Life
To limit the exposure to smog and harmful air pollutants, the government has implemented restrictions affecting multiple sectors:
- Educational Institutions: Schools will remain closed for another week, and online classes will continue for schools, colleges, and universities.
- Hospital Operations: All government hospital staff are on duty to handle the health crisis.
- Restaurants: Dine-in services are permitted only until 4 PM, while takeaway orders are allowed until 8 PM.
Health and Safety Advisory for Citizens
The government of Punjab has advised citizens to care about their health by minimizing the outdoor activities and wear masks if going out is necessary. Emergency desks at hospitals have also been improved, and departments have been ordered to confirm a firm and secure supply of medicines to handle the increasing number of smog related health issues.
