Beacon house school system bans Punjabi language; activists warn strong protests against it

Lahore: The campaigners and Punjabi activists have showed the serious concerns over an unfair ban on Punjabi language in Beacon house School System in Sahiwal district of Punjab.

The management of school, in a notification on Thursday, banned the students from using foul language during school hours and even at home.

However, shockingly, the English-medium school system considering it as ‘foul’ as abuses and other vulgar remarks put Punjabi on the list of ‘foul language’.

The aspirants have been advised not to speak Punjabi in schools as well as also instructed the parents to follow the ban at home as well.

The notice given by school management which has gone viral on social media, has met along with severe criticism by the firms working for the promotion of Punjabi, the native language of people in the most populated province of Pakistan, Punjab.

While talking to the private news channel, Punjabi Parchar president Ahmed Raza said:

“Enough is enough we cannot afford such tactics by a high class school. The school management must make it clear whether this policy is just for one school or the whole school system,” he questioned.

“The Article-251 of the constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan obliges the provinces to adopt some essential measure for promotion, teaching as well as usage of regional languages.

“All the English medium schools are deliberately making the children of Punjab unaware of their mother language through these bans. According to me it looks like an unconcealed attack on Punjabi language, also fanning the linguistic favoritisms in the country,” he added.
