The 20th century had witnessed many remarkable technological advancements that contributed to the progress and prosperity of society. While new fields emerged, the pre-existing fields were further explored. The potentials of Space science were explored, and all countries established institutions and universities where research and study on Space Science could be carried out. In the light of all this, in the year 2002 it was decided that an educational institution should be established in Pakistan that would deliver specialized education in the field of space and astronomy. Therefore, the Institute of Space Technology (also called IST) was established as a public research University in Islamabad. The IST established under auspices of Pakistan National Space Agency, lays emphasis on the study and research in the fields of astronomy, aerospace engineering and astronautics. The chartered university offers a list of comprehensive and well-designed undergraduate and graduate level courses.

The state-of-the-art campus of the IST is located at an ideal location (20-minute drive from Islamabad and Rawalpindi), away from the congestion, pollution, and distractions of the city. The University is accessible to the students of Rawalpindi and Islamabad as it has multiple routes. The picturesque landscape of the campus spans over 577 kanals of land. The state-of-the-art building is surrounded with lush green and sparking lawns. Ample parking spaces and large playgrounds are the salient features of the campus of IST. The tranquil and amiable environment of the IST is conducive to learning and research.

The major agenda of the university is to deliver up to date and latest training facilities to the students so that they can gain hands-on learning experience.

The roster of foreign qualified and well-experienced faculty members are dedicated to provide premier class education to the students. With the HEC grants, many of the faculty members have been privileged to receive foreign education and come back to their homeland to serve their nation.

Some highly sophisticated and well-equipped laboratories are housed in the campus of IST. These labs are equipped with the latest equipment like subsonic and supersonic wind tunnels. IT facilities have been further upgraded and improved with the addition of high-end-servers and broad band internet accessibility.

The students of the IST are presented with intellectual challenges that prepare them for the acute professional life ahead
