Govt Institute of Leather Technology Gujranwala

This Institute is one of the oldest Institutes serving the export oriented leather sector industries in Pakistan. It was established in 1949 by the Government of the Punjab. Initially, the main objectives of the Institute were research and introduction of quality control techniques. The objectives were in line with the requirements of the leather industry at that time which was employing outdated techniques for producing leather. Since Pakistan had abundant availability of hides and skins, it was considered appropriate to develop a sound supervisory and middle level managerial class through training in basic field of leather technology. Later on footwear sector was started to fulfill the requirements of footwear industries. Till today the Institute remains the only premier Institution for the development of Leather and footwear Technology in Pakistan. However, additional functions such as common facilities, advisory and testing services were introduced later on, which have now surpassed the training activities in the Centre.

The institute continued to provide its services to the Industry till 1974. PSIC felt a need for its re-organization in order to equip it with modern machinery and strengthen it with qualified manpower so that the latest production techniques and knowledge could be made available to the leather Industry which had been then attained high technological standards and had become an important foreign exchange earner for the country. By that time Pakistan had also switched over from the export of Raw Hides to export of Finished Leather.
