COMSAT (Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South) is a prestigious international organization which was developed with the prospect of reducing the gap between the developing countries and the developed countries through the widespread application of information technology and science.

Representatives from 36 countries attended the foundation-conference of COMSATS held at Islamabad on 4th & 5th October 1994.

Under the leadership of Nobel Laureate Dr. Abdus Salam, the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) proposed the establishment of a public research university in the urban area of Islamabad. The CIIT was a project of Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS), which is an inter-governmental organization with 21 member states in three continents.

The foundations of the university were laid down in 1988 and the university became a chartered university in August 2000.

The university is highly ranked and well known. According to the QS Rankings (2014) the CIIT is placed among the top 250 Universities of Asia. In the category of Computer Sciences & IT, the university grabs the top positions in Pakistan. CIIT has received high ranks nationally. The university stands 3rd in the category of General Universities by HEC. It has also been ranked 6th in overall universities within Pakistan by the HEC in 2015.

The university is honored to be a member of the Commonwealth Universities.

COMSATs is a multi-campus and multi-disciplinary university, which has its main campus situated in ChakShahzad, Islamabad. A large student body of over 5,000 students is accommodated by the main campus, while more than 30,000 students are enrolled in the satellite campuses. The campuses of the university are built all across Pakistan in various cities such as Vehari, Abbottabad, Attock, Lahore and Wah. COMSATs has a total of 8 campuses, most of which are ISO 9001 certified. Virtual education is also supported by this university.

The university has a diverse and multi culture environment, students not only from different cities and provinces but also different countries are welcomed by this university.

There are 18 notable departments of the university which offer around 100 recognized and acknowledged degree programs. The university awards undergraduate, post graduate and Ph.D. degrees. Around 40 undergraduate programs and about 60 graduate programs in various disciplines are offered by COMSATs.

The 8 campuses offer numerous facilities and services, such as stocked and well-resourced libraries (150,000 books) and ten and resource centers.

The rostrum of faculty is highly qualified and the crème in their respective disciplines. COMSATS has more than 3000 faculty members which included research associates.

It is the aspiration of CIIT to become one of the top research institution and one of the most illustrious higher education institution in Pakistan. The university dedicates all its efforts and energies to achieve a rank among the 500 universities of the world by 2021.
