Selection Process
The scholarship is awarded to high school seniors based on a thorough evaluation of their application and supporting documents.
Semi-finalist candidates for the Stamps Scholarship are required to interview via Zoom with the Stamps Scholarship Selection Committee in January.
Finalists will be selected based on a review of the admissions application and supporting documents, including their Zoom interview, and notified of their status as finalists at the time of admission in late January.
Only African undergraduate or graduate students conducting research in Africa are eligible for this fellowship.
Applicants must be enrolled in an MSU degree-granting program, and awardees must return to MSU as registered students in the semester following the award.
Priority will be given to students in good academic standing and with demonstrated financial need.
Applicants must complete any MSU requirements related to doing research abroad (IRB training, for instance)
Fellowship recipients must write and submit a report (3 to 5 pages) to the African Studies Center within one month of their return from Africa.
The Stamps Scholarship is UM's most prestigious merit award available to students at the University of Miami. This scholarship is awarded to exceptional and academically accomplished high school seniors.
Additional benefits of the Stamps Scholarship include being part of the Stamps Scholars on-campus and national communities, funding to support academic and scientific research projects, cultural and leadership programs, study abroad, conventions and other regional conferences, and invitations to online events and networking opportunities.
Terms and Conditions
A Stamps Scholar must complete a full-time undergraduate program of study with no fewer than 12 credit hours during each of the fall and spring semesters for a minimum of 24 credit hours per academic year. A minimum of a 3.0 GPA for the academic year must be maintained at the University of Miami, with the initial calculation at the end of the second semester of attendance.
Must be 24 years of age or younger as of the Submittal Deadline.
Must have received an acceptance letter for the upcoming fall semester from a U.S.-based college or university.
Must provide a complete undergraduate transcript showing the awarded degree.
Must be a first-time full-time student in a graduate or post-baccalaureate professional program.
Must be fluent in English and provide English proficiency test results.
Must submit a Graduation Schedule prepared and approved by the institution’s Department Chair.
Must contribute towards educational costs by working 240 hours from January 1 to September 1 before the fall semester each year (employment or paid internships must be supervised and compensated).
