MPH Guide

The MPH stands for Master’s in Public Health that prepare individuals to work for the various communities and improve the awareness of the people about health, education, and policy. This degree program allows the students to understand the core disciplines of public health such as biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental health, health policy & administration. Moreover, the students also get the knowledge and skills and apply them by focusing on the specific public health concentration. MPH provides various career opportunities to the candidates and the candidates after the completion of this study program can avail the job opportunity offered by the private and public sectors. The duration of the M.Phil MPH is 2 years and the curriculum may vary across colleges and universities. The credit hours needed for an MPH degree generally range from 36-40 credits.          

 

Objectives of Study Program

Following are the objectives of the MPH study program

  • Solve the problems related to health according to the financial, social, cultural, environmental, and political framework of Pakistan and its surrounding region. 
  • Plan, conduct, investigate and deduce the results of relevant studies as well as programs. 
  • Plan, manage, observe and consider interventions in public health. 
  • Transfer public health messages to the people effectively. 
  • Advocate effective policies and practices of public health.

 

MPH Eligibility Criteria

The candidates who intend to take admission in the MPH degree program must fall in the eligibility criteria that is mentioned below. 

  • The candidates who have completed MBBS, BDS, MD, BSc Nursing 4 Years, DVM, BSc Paramedics-4 years, BSPH, Pharm D/Equivalent (Registered with Pharmacy Council), and BS Physiotherapy/Equivalent are eligible to apply for the MPH study program.
  • Moreover, the candidates that have done masters in a relevant subject such as Sociology, Statistics/Biostatistics, Human Nutrition, Microbiology, Physiology, Psychology, Anthropology, Business Administration, Economics Public Health Engineering, and Zoology can also take admission in MPH.
  • The age limit of the candidates is 45 years and the preference will be given to the candidates of younger age that fulfill the selection criteria
  • Applicants must have an appropriate level of English language proficiency. The candidates have to submit the results for English proficiency tests such as TOEFL or IELTS. The candidates have to score a minimum TOEFL score of 450 on the paper-based test and 200 on the computer-based test, the minimum score required for IELTS is 6.
  • The candidate must have three years of full-time work experience in the case of medical doctors, after the house job) in the public or private sector in the fields related to health. including the armed forces, such as Primary health care settings, Recognized training and research institutions, such as departments of community medicine/school of nursing/public, Public health-related vertical programs, and policy positions both at the federal and provincial level.

The candidates have to study the various subjects such as Social and Behavioral Aspects of Public Health, Basic Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Environmental and Occupational Health, Health Promotion, Advocacy, and Social Mobilization, Health system, Advanced Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Epidemiological Report Writing, Epidemiology of Communicable & Non-Communicable Diseases, Human Resource Management for Health, Health Policy, Planning and Management, Financial Management

 

Other Study Options 

The Ph.D. in Public Health aims to prepare the students for professions in academics and research. Moreover, it also allows understanding of research theories and methodologies that can be implemented professionally. The candidates can also do the PhD in Epidemiology, PhD in Community Health, PhD in Public Health Administration and PhD in Health Care.

 

Admission Process

Applications should be submitted according to the requirements mentioned by the respective educational institute. The required documents that must be attached with the admission form are a Domicile certificateFinal degrees along with transcriptsattested photocopy of a national identity cardpassport-sized photographsand NOC/Migration certificate. The selection of the candidates is based on the entrance exam and only short-listed candidates will be called for the interview. Completed applications should reach the Office of the institution at the given address before the last date. The incomplete applications and applications submitted after the deadline will not be considered.

 

Each training institution has its own MPH Admissions Committee that is formed by the Principal. The MPH Admissions Committee is responsible to select the eligible candidates that can take admission in the MPH program. Moreover, the committee also establishes the procedures for the timely review of applications to the Program. The applicant’s acceptance depends upon the receipt of all required documents such as official transcripts. The MPH Admissions Committee identifies the candidates with missing documents that do not meet eligibility standards. Candidates fulfilling the eligibility criteria will appear in the written screening exam. Based on the performance candidates will be shortlisted for further selection. The final decision regarding the selection of the candidates is made by the MPH Admissions Committee. The final selection will be done based on the following distribution of marks.

  • Previous academic record score 10
  • Previous public health experience score, scored as follows out of the total 10
  • Screening examination score 50
  • Interview score 30
  • Total score 100
