In a significant development for Pakistan’s higher education landscape, the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training has officially appointed Mr. Nadeem Mahbub as the Acting Chairperson of the Higher Education Commission (HEC). The decision follows the completion of Prof. Dr. Ahmed Mukhtar’s three-year tenure.
According to an official notification issued by the Ministry, Mr. Mahbub’s appointment has been made in accordance with Section 8(3) of the HEC Ordinance, 2002. The move was approved by the Prime Minister of Pakistan, who also serves as the Controlling Authority of the Higher Education Commission.
Currently serving as the Federal Secretary of the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training, Mr. Nadeem Mahbub is already a key figure in shaping national education policy. In addition to his existing responsibilities, he is also a member of the HEC, making him well-positioned to step into the role of Acting Chairperson during this transitional period.
With this dual capacity, Mr. Mahbub is expected to bring greater alignment between the Ministry and the HEC, particularly in policy implementation and governance across Pakistan’s higher education institutions.
Mr. Mahbub will serve as Acting Chairperson for up to three months or until a permanent Chairperson is appointed, whichever comes first. His temporary leadership is crucial in ensuring uninterrupted administrative and policy continuity at the HEC during this interim phase.
The appointment comes at a pivotal time when the HEC is focusing on quality assurance, academic innovation, digital transformation, and international collaborations. Stakeholders in the higher education sector, including universities and research institutions, are looking to the new Acting Chairperson for stable leadership and strategic decision-making.
This appointment is widely seen as a strategic move by the government to maintain institutional stability and ensure that key educational reforms remain on track. With Mr. Mahbub’s background in federal education management and his existing role within the HEC, expectations are high for a smooth transition and effective short-term leadership.
