Karachi: Higher Education Commission of Pakistan has given its seal of approval to the proposals submitted by the Board of Advanced Studies and Research (BASR) of University of Karachi on the current issue of the transfer of the MPhil programme into a PhD programme.
In this regard, a meeting was organized between the officials of the HEC and BASR last month in which the senior faculty member Professor Dr Jamil Kazmi informed the delegation of higher education commission on the proposals of BASR via presentation.

According to the statement issued by the Karachi University’s Public Relations Officer on Tuesday, the commission has approved the recommendations submitted by BASR and the intellectuals who were registered in MPhil leading to the PhD programme till 2015 and have already been transferred into the PhD phase will continue their studies and their degrees would be verified by the Higher Education Commission subject to their submission within the period provided officially and the completion of other admission or award of degree requirements.
It is also stated that the aspirants who were registered in the year 2016 and onwards will also be permitted to choose an option to convert their degrees from MPhil to PhD after receiving MPhil/MS/ equivalent degree after meeting the essential needed criteria.

The aspirants will be required to meet the given criteria:
The candidate will be required to:
o Secure minimum CGPA of 3
o Complete 30 credit hours of course work OR
o 24 credits hours of course work together with the six credit hours’ thesis work or equivalent
o Pass the admission test of the subject and complete 18 credit hours of 800 level courses and submit the thesis so as to be eligible to be granted a PhD degree.
After the successful completion of MPhil programme, the applicants can join the PhD programme on the basis of meeting the transfer criteria, it stated, adding that the PhD degree will be granted after the completion of 18 credit hours of 800 level courses, clearing of complete exams, defense of synopsis, publication of one paper in an Higher Education Commission recognized journal, two positive reports from overseas evaluators as well as a successful defense of the thesis according to the strategy of PhD.
