Former VC of Punjab University, Mujahid Kamran Alleges NAB of Torturing him and his Colleagues

The Former VC of Punjab University, Mr. Mujahid Kamran, who was arrested by NAB on allegations of illegal appointments and financial corruption during his tenure along with former registrars of the University, has been released on Friday. While talking to the media, He said that the arrested administrators of The Punjab Universityare being tortured during investigation, NAB has installed cameras in the washrooms also, He questioned, what is the necessity of installing cameras in washroom and what has it to do with investigation?

He told the media that the case against him was a lie and mere fabrication, He said,’ the plan of a harassment case against me was designed at the residence of a fashion designer," he alleged. "The chief secretary who made the case is now working with USAID’. He told the press that the arrested are being lodged with more cases without any concrete basis.

Talking about the arrested VC of Sargodha University he said, "The vice chancellor of Sargodha University was subjected to mistreatment. A 25-year-old [NAB] officer told the vice chancellor that he would slap him in the face.” Mr Kamran said that he never conducted any corruption; the money he earned was through legal means. He had done his Job with complete honesty. He said all the appointments and Scholarships awarded during his tenure were according to merit. He said that he is being mistreated because he invited opposition of US establishment because he revealed true facts about 9/11 through one of his book.

On the hand, the NAB officials have denied the allegations of torture and imposing undue pressure on the arrested officials of Punjab University and the former VC. The NAB officials suggested the VC via means of media to focus on proving his innocence in the court instead of lodging fake allegations against NAB. NAB official said that the former VC never met Fawad and Nadeem because he was arrested on October 11 whereas; Fawad and Nadeem were arrested on 1st of October.

While the case is still in the court, the VC has to prove himself as innocent from all the allegations against him. NAB also denied the installation of cameras in the washroom calling it “baseless allegation”. The VC said that NAB has beaten one of the arrested official in front his mother that has tortured him .This controversial case has given base to so many debates in the country questioning the effectiveness of education system of Pakistan and role HEC chairmanship.

Punjab University which is one of the oldest and most renowned University of Pakistan has been going through deterioration of academic system due these administrative deformities. The Government of Pakistan has huge responsibility to eliminate corruption from educational institutes for development of economy and education in the country. The culprits should be met with due treatment and those who are innocent must be treated with deserving respect, however the case on former officials and VC of Punjab University is still under investigation, general public should avoid making judgment before the final verdict. It will set an example of justice.
