Lahore, The University of Punjab has awarded 1,255 degrees among students on its 121st convocation which was held at varsity’s Faisal Auditorium, New Campus and has recognized more than 200 new PhDs on Saturday which is a national record according to Vice Chancellor Prof Mujahid Kamran.
As many as 206 PhD, 345 MPhil, 339 master’s and 180 bachelor’s degrees were awarded at the convocation, while 155 students were awarded 211 medals for outstanding academic performance. The proceedings of the convocation were organized in Urdu, for the first time in decades.
Vice Chancellor Dr, Mujahid Kamran while addressing the students at the ceremony at Faisal Auditorium said that no other university in Pakistan had given more than 150 PhDs in a year. The Punjab University was carrying out better than most, he said.
The vice chancellor emphasized that Islam stimulated Muslims to get knowledge. verses of the Around eighth verses of Holy Quran stressed over the observation of natural phenomena and solving the mysteries of the universe, he said. By comparison, there were around 225 legislative verses. This proved the importance of knowledge in Islam.
He said that other countries are spending an average of 4-5 percent of GDP on education, Pakistan had abridged educational spending from 2 percent to around 1.5 percent of GDP.
He further said that we are self-governing country only because of our atom bomb, The government must abolish corruption and allot more money to education.
PU Registrar Prof Khan Raas Masood, Examinations Controller Prof Liaqat Ali, Convocation Committee Chairman Prof Haris Rashid and Faculty of Oriental Learning Dean Dr Mazhar Moeen also attended the ceremony.
PU awarded PhD degrees to four scholars in different subjects on Friday. Azeem Azhar Raja s/o Raja Muhammad Azhar Khan has been bestowed a PhD degree in the subject of Economics after approval of his thesis titled “Analysis of Subsistence Agriculture in Rain Fed Areas with Special Emphasis on Punjab”, Mahmood Saba in the subject of Molecular Biology after approval of his thesis on the topic “Effect of Caloric Restriction on Stem Cells for Repair of Aged Heart’’, Amani Moazzam Baig Mirza in Administrative Sciences and Qurattulain Tahirah in the subject of Arabic after approval of her thesis titled “Children’s Literature of Kamil Kilani and Hakeem Muhammad Saeed.”
