Lahore: The chairperson of Punjab Higher Education Commission (HEC) Dr Nizamud Din grieve over the deficiencies in the educational system of country and demanded for essential training programmes for teachers at all levels.
PHEC chairman was addressing at the certificate awarding ceremony of a 5-day faculty-training workshop arranged by Government College University Lahore (GCU).
GCU Quality Enhancement Cell arranged teachers’ training in association along with higher education HEC to boost the capacity of young teachers in andragogy and communication abilities.
While addressing Dr Nizam said;
“Teaching is not an ordinary job like it is generally regarded as. Today, it is the most sensitive and specialized field”.
He also disclosed that HEC was going to establish three academies for teachers in Punjab on the pattern of civil services academy where wide-ranging training will be provided to the teachers of university and college.

Further he said that these academies will also have residential facilities, so that teachers from various far off places can also interact during trainings and learn from sharing good exercises.
Vice chancellor of Government College University Prof Dr Hassan Amir Shah said Andragogy (adult learning) had become highly progressive, so teachers were required to move from conventional to modern instructional policies. He expected that the participants would endeavor to apply what they had achieved from the training.
Professor Hassan Shah moreover said;
“For a better society, we need to have good teachers, so the training as well as capacity building of teachers is thought to be the top priority”.
The vice chancellor also admired the ideas of Higher Education Commission, particularly its strategies for capacity building of the university teachers and subsidy for research in social sciences.
He advised the teachers that, before applying for subsidy to attend any conference, they must check the integrity and ranking of institution or university arranging it.
While providing the details of training, QEC Director of GCU Iram Sohail said that the topics they touched involved teaching viewpoints in higher education, andragogy as a substitute vision to traditional concept of pedagogy, curriculum progress and assessment methods, communication abilities, policies for effective oral as well as presentation skills, academic writing, micro teaching etc.
The success of an institution is completely depending on the procedure and product, plus achievements of the students are one of the most rewarding aspects of teaching occupation, she added.
