Islamabad: Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC), under the PhD fellowship program, has offered scholarships for the PhD studies for students from the entire country (Pakistan) for the academic session 2016-2017.
Higher Education Commission has offered these scholarships for all fields including engineering, information technology, management sciences, business education, arts and humanities, social sciences, agriculture and veterinary sciences, biological sciences physical sciences as well as medical sciences.
As per the report from an official of the commission, the total number of available seats for PhD scholarships is 1000.
He furthermore said that:
This figure is only for this phase under the indigenous PhD fellowship program. A lot of scholarships were being offered in various phases.

These scholarships announced by the higher education commission are indigenous, so when a selected candidate passes through the prescribed criteria, they would be given admissions in local universities which are recognized by HEC.
According to official website of HEC, there are 180 recognized universities and Degree Awarding Institutions running crosswise the country including Azad Jammu Kashmir (AJK).
The funding given to the Higher Education commission is worth Rs 300 million for the financial year 2016-2017.

This amount was merely provided for the purpose of scholarships and other schemes as well. At the same time another amount of Rs 298 million has been kept in funds for the development and up gradation of the universities of less developed regions of the country.
How to Apply?
o If you are interested and want to apply for this scholarship then simply sign-in into your Common Profile at E-Portal of Higher Education Commission.
o After signing in, click on the “Scholarship and Grants” on the left and then on “Indigenous PhD Fellowship Program”.
o Follow the instructions given over there, fill in the application form and then submit it.
o For the new users who don’t have an account yet, click on the “Register”, make an account, and after that follow the instructions given above.
Deadline:
Last date for the submission of application forms is January 31st, 2017.
Eligibility Criteria
To avail these scholarships, candidates are required to meet the given eligibility criteria:
o Candidate must have a Pakistani or AJK nationality
o For MS/MPhil, the applicants must have minimum of 16 years of education without any 3rd division or Grade D in degree/certificate in the complete academic career
o The applicants applying for direct PhD scholarships must have minimum CGPA 3.0(out of 4.0 in the semester system) or first division (in the annual examination system) in MS/MPhil/ and an equivalent degree is required together with the condition mentioned above.
o Maximum age at the closing date of application is 40 years for full-time regular faculty members of government sector university/DAIs and regular employee of the government sector/R&D organizations, whereas 35 is the maximum eligible age for all others.
o The applicants who are already getting any other HEC/Government scholarship are not eligible to apply
o The candidates registered into PhD programme before spring 2015 semester are not eligible.
