Lahore: Almost 79 private universities across the Punjab have been declared as “illegal” universities by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan.
These illegal universities are institutes that are registered on paper however have no physical existence. Some of the universities even have ghost teachers and aspirants.
An investigation committee has been established which will take action against 4 other universities away from the 79 ghost ones.
Federal Higher Education Commission (HEC) has declared more than 100 institutes, varsities as well as colleges illegal in the Punjab province.
79 universities confirmed as fake, 15 others to be investigated
The above mentioned 79 illegal universities also issue fake degrees to students. The first stage of the investigation led by Punjab higher Education Commission found 79 of the total 100 universities were illegal universities.

The second stage will have them investigate 15 educational institutes affiliated with universities.
Because of the complaints by different students from these so called “educational” institutes, a party of senior vice chancellors has been set up to investigate 4 private universities in Lahore only.
These universities include:
1. Lahore Leads University
2. Global Institute
3. Superior University
4. University of South Asia
Chairperson of HEC, Dr. Nizam-ud-Din says that aspirants have been barred from going to any college or institute affiliated along with a private university for admission.

Fake/Illegal Educational Institutes in Other Areas
It must be noted that there are a large number of other fake universities/educational institutes in other provinces as well, as per the list provided by the commission.
There are 36 of these in Sindh, 3 in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, 11 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and 4 of them are in Islamabad only.
